Grand Canyon Facts

Here are two things I learned about the Canyon on our trip.

Grand Staircase

Here’s a handout I received from my trip.

Our guides showed us that the geological layers at the Grand Canyon match the bottom of Zion Canyon and Bryce Canyon. But the top layers of Zion and Bryce Canyon are missing from the top of Grand Canyon (evidence of remnant layers are found in Red and Cedar Butte – more on these shortly).

How could these layers disappear? Through a global flood.

Water would stratify sediments out by grain weight, size, and density and deposit them on the surface producing straight across layers. Notice how the canyon walls are straight. The flood waters would carry away some of those layers over time, resulting in some top layers present while others are gone.

Red Butte & Cedar Butte

These Buttes are found at the East and West entrances of the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Both of these buttes, have the same geological layers you find in the grand staircase.

How could there be two 900 ft mounds of sandstone remain where there is flat desert all around them? Have you ever heard of this?
